A short bit on Howard’s remarks: famous Voltaire quote aside, if you cannot see that a black man in America, raised in North Carolina, not even 50 years after black people finally gained the right to vote in the U.S. (and are still fighting to maintain it through every manner of voter disenfranchisement), might have enough resentment towards much of this country (one that denied his ancestors basic human rights and agency for centuries, yet still harbors institutionalized racism in much of its operating policy today) to say what he said on a camera phone about the Star-Spangled Banner, you’re beyond help.
