I wouldn’t have fucking believed it if Can’t Stop the Bleeding hadn’t found it on the AP wire: apparently one of the most conspicuous Yankee fans, former New York mayor Rudy Giuliani, is pulling for the Red Sox to win the World Series because he’s an American League guy:
“I’m an American League fan, and I go with the American League team, maybe with the exception of the Mets,” he said. “Maybe that would be the one time I wouldn’t because I’m loyal to New York.”
Giuliani’s Yankees lost in the first round of the playoffs, then lost their manager when Giuliani’s friend, Joe Torre, refused to accept a pay cut and walked away. Giuliani said the Yankees had “a great season.”
The former New York mayor said his declaration of temporary Red Sox loyalty was “not just because I’m here in Massachusetts.”
“In Colorado, in the next week or two, you will see, I will have the courage to tell the people of Colorado the same thing, that I am rooting for the Red Sox in the World Series,” he said.
Like it’ll get him any votes in Boston or anywhere else in Massachusetts, as it happens to be one of the more Democratic-leaning states in the country. And even better is his “exception” for the Mets. Look, even the most rabid of New York Mets fans don’t want Rudy on the bandwagon when they get deep in the playoffs and the Yankees don’t. You don’t get to pull for the Mets or the Red Sox if the Yankees are out of it. You root for their opponent to sweep their asses out of the playoffs, and if the Mets meet the Red Sox, then Rudy ought to be pulling for a meteor to hit Fenway.
It’s not just bad politics. It’s violating all the rules of fandom. Supposedly resolute on terror, tough on crime, but very liberal when it comes to riding the bandwagon.
