Musical Chairs Update.

I think I may be obsessed with the coaching carousel on this blog; the “coaches” category is one of the largest here. Let’s update the fallout.

UCLA: AD Dan Guerrero just fired Karl Dorrell, like everyone pretty much thought it would after another mediocre season.  Rumored candidates are Boise State’s Chris Petersen, Texas Tech’s Mike Leach, and former NFL and college football coach Steve Mariucci. Defensive coordinator DeWayne Walker will coach the Bruins in their bowl game, and UCLA wants him to stick around for recruiting purposes, but may not be able to do that…

Washington State: …because Walker is a candidate for Wazzu’s coaching vacancy (supposedly, although a Seattle Times list of candidates doesn’t have his name), after the school and Bill Doba decided to part ways. Wazzu’s list includes former coach Mike Price, Cal D-coordinator Bob Gregory, Mizzou O-coordinator Dave Christensen, and, in a truly WTF name, former Louisville and MSU coach John L. Smith.

Nebraska: Bo Pelini’s leaving Baton Rouge for Lincoln, although it’s not known whether he’ll be working for LSU during the championship game or heading up to replace Bill Callahan early.

Ole Miss: Houston Nutt, literally a day after getting the boot/resigning at Arkansas, lands in Oxford. Should be an interesting match-up when the Rebels and the Hawgs play again. He’s waiting on some of his staff at Arkansas to join him in Oxford after the Cotton Bowl.

Arkansas: Flirtation with Tommy Tuberville rumored, now I just heard ESPN’s Joe Schad say Tulsa offensive coordinator and former Hawgs O-coordinator Gus Malzahn is in the running too, and rumors are being floated about Clemson’s Tommy Bowden (probably more by Clemson folk who want him gone.)

Georgia Tech: Rumored candidates to replace Chan Gailey include but are not limited to: Auburn D-coordinator Will Muschamp, current Baltimore Ravens O-coordinator Rick Neuheisel (sheisty personified), Georgia Southern coach Chris Hatcher, and UConn coach Randy Edsall (who said no).

Michigan: Les Miles is out, so that leaves rumors about Cincy’s Brian Kelly and two interviews with D-coordinator Ron English (also rumored as an Arky candidate).  Also noted by the Free Press: Iowa’s Kirk Ferentz and Cal’s Jeff Tedford — why UM would want either, considering the poor seasons both have had, is beyond me.

  1. Peterson would be a really interesting choice at UCLA… only 2 years experience as a head coach, but it’s safe to say that those 2 years have been pretty impressive.
