Anaheim Ducks GM Brian Burke must enjoy reveling in the image of his team as a rough-and-tumble bunch, ready to be physical, even on the edge of cheap shot artistry, because there’s really no other way to approach the signing of forward Todd Bertuzzi, notable as of late more for being an injury-hobbled forward and for his disgusting hit on the Avs’ Steve Moore years ago. The L.A. Times says Ducks fans and message boards are split regarding the whole mess, which I can understand — Bertuzzi seemed contrite in the aftermath of the hit, which left Moore without a career in pro hockey and oher, much more serious problems he’ll likely have to deal with for the rest of his life.
I’m not particularly thrilled on seeing Bertuzzi on a team I enjoy watching, and as an Avs fan, I don’t think I’m capable of forgiving him for his hit — but the biggest matter is whether he’s actually worth the $8 million per annum that Burke will be paying him; the man barely played after Detroit got him in a trade, and what makes the Ducks think he’ll be any better?
