So, after all the dawdling, posturing, etc., the Dolphins and Chiefs finally worked out a trade for Trent Green, and he’s officially a Fin now. Now, that means the Daunte Culpepper Experiment (great band name, actually), is not long for the South Beach area, and I’m wondering just why.
“They would like to trade me in order to ‘get something for me,”‘ Culpepper, who is his own agent, wrote in an e-mail after meeting with Miami general manager Randy Mueller and first-year coach Cam Cameron. “However, it is my position that I have already been down that road and I am not interested in being traded.”
Oooh. Culpepper’s due to make 5.5 million bucks in salary this year, and that’s something Cameron and Mueller would like to avoid with their favored quarterback now in town. I’m not sure why, otherwise, that the Dolphins wouldn’t let these two battle it out. Why would you give the reins to an aging quarterback who hasn’t led a team to jack squat? I don’t remember the Chiefs winning divisions with Green (edit: well, they did win one AFC West crown in 2003; thanks, Kevin — definitely blacked that one out), never mind the way Indy took them apart in the Wild Card game last playoff season, and this man is anointed your starter without a competition in a division where the QB talent level is better than he is?
(I’m counting Brady and Pennington here; Losman needs to show up first for a full season.)
I still think they fucked up big time on Brady Quinn; quarterbacks are always hit and miss in the NFL, but I’m not sure John Beck exactly played against top competition at BYU, and Quinn could have made a semblance of an attempt of trying to start right away. Now, they’re looking at a 37-year old Green off a season with a serious concussion and a 30-year old QB in Culpepper who may not be fully healed from the injury he suffered in Minnesota and then aggravated last year.
Green said it was time for the offense to catch up to the defense. That probably isn’t happening this year.

You are so right on Quinn. Taking the NINTH PICK on a guy who’s noted for speed, but would’ve been a stretch at 20? Man… Quinn would’ve been considered a steal at #9 if he went there! Have the ‘Phins drafted a QB first round since Marino?
As a Chiefs fan, I can say that all the Dolphins bought was an above-average game manager. His gaudy stats in KC were partly due to the fact that Priest Holmes could take a dump-off pass 80 yards at the drop of a hat.
That plus concussions? Scary.

to refresh your memory Trent Green and the Chiefs went 13-3 in 2003………..since you “don’t remember the Chiefs winning divisions with Green.” He’ll make less mistakes than Culpepper, but is at the end of the road.
Thanks, Kevin. I tend to kind of black out seasons where the Chiefs win anything as a Broncos fan.
Trent Green to Ted Ginn Jr. is going to save the Dolphins. Riiight…
At least Quinn is at the beginning of his career, not the end.
Thanks Miami, for adding another QB to the list of those that tried but couldn’t fill Marino’s cleats.
It will be a viable stopgap until Beck is ready.
Beck is FAR more ready to start than Quinn would have been – Quinn can’t hit the broad side of a barn, and accuracy is pretty hard to teach.
And as far as the competition Beck played at BYU – remember who he was throwing to. Quinn was surrounded by blue-chip, all-American recruits, he had two of the best receivers in the country. John Beck was throwing to white Mormon boys and other crumbs from the BCS table, and his stats were better (as was his team’s record this past year).
Fair points, Joel, but that also goes for whom he was throwing against — not exactly top-level secondaries there.
Being a Dolphins fan is the equivalent to being a Red Sox fan pre-2004. :(
PS Should’t we be on each other’s blogroll? This tapdance has gone on far too long…
Shorty – yes, we should. It can only end badly otherwise.

I pictured you and Shorty circling each other like Jets vs. Sharks.
Becks competition is very similar to the competition Quinn has faced.
