Commerce Before Camp, Rook.

Many of the top-flight of this year’s draft class are the type that wanted to get to mini-camp this weekend early, to establish a repore with their teammates and show the vets that they’re responsible.

However, the NFL didn’t exactly let them do that. One example is Packer running back Brandon Jackson, who was barred from attending Packer mini-camp, in an order to attend an event in Hollywood that’s all about endorsements and trading cards:

According to Jackson’s agent, Gary Wichard, a mandate handed down from the National Football League Management Council this week has barred Jackson from attending the Packers’ mandatory minicamp today through Sunday because Jackson is expected to attend the “2007 Reebok NFL Rookie Premier, presented by EA Sports” to start working on his endorsement deals and player cards.

His only real choice is either to go to Los Angeles or stay at home. But he can’t come to minicamp.

Anthony Gonzalez had to go through the same thing, forced to miss the Colts’ mini-camp, which probably pissed off his new quarterback. Stupid on the NFL’s part, both on the league and individual teams. The teams are not blind to these sorts of things, and probably know about them well in advance, especially since this event those rookies were at will also air on the NFL Network at some point.

However, not all the teams opted for this route: the Lions moved their mini-camp from this weekend to a future date in order to accomodate #1 pick Calvin Johnson, who also had to be at the promotional event.
